The Russo Bros. Open Up About That Epic Captain America Moment in AVENGERS: ENDGAME

One of my favorite parts of Avengers: Endgame, the point in the film where I shouted for joy, was that incredible moment where Captain America finally wields Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and beat the living hell out of Thanos with it!
Ever since he first tried to lift it in Avengers: Age of Ultron at Tony Stark’s party, where he moved it slightly, fans have been waiting to see him pick it up and put it to use. Well, he finally did it in Endgame and it was ridiculously epic!
That was just the coolest damn thing seeing Cap call down lighting from the sky with it! Wow! That was just so perfect. During a recent interview with Joe Russo and Anthony Russo while guests on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Joe talked about this moment, saying:
“I think everyone who’s a Marvel fan in that moment where Cap tested the hammer, felt deep down in their heart that he was worthy and that he could potentially lift that and boy wouldn’t it be special if one day he did.
“And obviously if you create drama around the circumstances of him wielding the hammer and then kicking Thanos’ ass for 30 seconds after that, we felt like we could create a riseable moment for the audience.”
It totally was a riseable moment! Fans in the theater shouted and screamed and jumped out of their freakin’ seats when it happened! As you might imagine, the Russo Bros. enjoyed the reaction from the fans, and they snuck into certain theaters just to watch the reactions! Anthony continued:
“We have to confess we have snuck into more than one theater over the past week and have taken great pleasure in witnessing the audience reaction to that moment.”
When asked why Cap’s worthiness wasn’t displayed until Endgame, Anthony answered:
“In our heads, he was able to wield it. He didn’t know that until that moment in Ultron when he tried to pick it up, but Cap’s sense of character and his sort of humility and sort of out of deference to Thor’s ego, Cap in that moment realizing he can move the hammer, decides not to.”
Joe added, “Thor says ‘I knew it,’ you know.”
