The Russo Bros. Reportedly Set to Guide Marvel’s Future Beyond AVENGERS: SECRET WARS
Marvel Studios is gearing up for another major creative reset, and it looks like the Russo Bros. could be leading the charge once again.
After years of uneven reactions to the post-Endgame era, Marvel appears to be turning back to the duo that helped define the Infinity Saga with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
According to new reports, Joe and Anthony Russo won’t just be returning to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, they might also continue shaping the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond those films.
Scooper Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus shared, “Marvel’s bringing the Russos along for the ride post-Secret Wars as part of the famous ‘Marvel Parliament,’ basically just overseeing the general story for the next Saga.”
Perez went on to explain the reasoning behind the move: “Because they want to avoid the mistakes they made with the Multiverse Saga in trying to branch out to many different story points and having multiple open endings without having a clear direction.”
It’s no secret that Marvel has struggled to find the same narrative focus and emotional weight that made the Infinity Saga so powerful. Even Kevin Feige has admitted that the studio’s focus on quantity may have come at the cost of quality.
Perez elaborated on how Marvel’s recent creative detours came to be, saying, “The main idea of the saga was to basically introduce this idea of the multiverse so Marvel could play around in the sandbox and do things they’d never really get a chance to do if it was just their main, established universe.”
He added that the pandemic heavily disrupted the studio’s plans, forcing them to release projects “months and even years before they were ready.”
That’s where the Russos’ expertise comes in. Their ability to balance sprawling ensembles and intricate storytelling makes them the perfect fit to help Marvel get back on track.
Perez said, “They can provide their input into what works where, what can be introduced now vs. what can be introduced some other time, and so on.”
While there’s been no official confirmation from Marvel Studios, the possibility of the Russos helping guide the next era of storytelling is an interesting one. If true, this move could mark a return to the kind of cohesive, emotionally-driven storytelling that made Marvel’s earlier phases so good.
Fans have long wondered who could steer the MCU through its next chapter, and if this report pans out, the answer might just be the filmmakers who helped deliver some of the most epic moments in the franchise’s history.
