The Russo Bros. Tease AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Will Push The MCU to a “New Level” of Complexity Thanks To Doctor Doom
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has never been afraid to crack a joke in the middle of chaos. But if you’ve been watching the trailers for Avengers: Doomsday, you’ve probably noticed something feels different this time. There’s a heavier, sharper, and less quippy vibe. According to Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, that shift is very intentional.
In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Anthony Russo opened up about how they’re approaching this next chapter of the MCU. He explained:
"As much as we run at the fun in terms of what these films can be, we also run at the complexity and the difficulty of what these movies can do at a narrative level. I think we've found a new level of that in Doomsday."
That’s a pretty big promise considering these are the filmmakers who delivered Infinity War and Endgame. If they’re saying they’ve pushed things further, that should get fans’ attention.
Joe Russo kept it short and to the point, adding: "Victor von Doom demands a certain tone,” and that might be the key to everything.
Doctor Doom isn’t Loki. He isn’t Ultron. He isn’t Thanos. Victor von Doom operates on a different wavelength. He’s theatrical, ruthless, calculating, and convinced he’s right. If the Russos are building the film around that energy, then the serious vibe in the trailers makes perfect sense.
Speaking of those trailers, the four released so far have been almost completely humor-free. They’ve offered very little plot detail beyond the jaw-dropping reveal that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers is back. But outside of these teases, Marvel is keeping the story locked down tight.
What we do know is the cast is absolutely massive. Doomsday pulls in legacy characters from the Fox-era X-Men films, members of the Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four, and familiar MCU heavy hitters.
Avengers: Doomsday isn’t aiming to be a light, crowd-pleasing romp. The Russos are leaning into narrative weight and thematic intensity, and with Victor von Doom at the center of it all, the tone sounds like it’s going to reflect that gravitas.
If they truly have found “a new level” of complexity within the MCU, we could be looking at something that challenges audiences in ways these films haven’t before.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, and it sounds like Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are walking into something far more dangerous than they realize.
