The Russo Bros. Tease Thor’s Darker Journey in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

Thor has been through just about every flavor of superhero imaginable in the MCU, but Chris Hemsworth is about to bring the God of Thunder back to his warrior roots.

Joe Russo and Anthony Russo are returning to the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday, and they’ve offered a tease of how Thor will be handled in the massive Marvel movie. For fans who preferred the battle-hardened version of the character from Avengers: Infinity War, this should sound pretty damn good.

Speaking about Hemsworth and the different interpretations of Thor throughout the MCU, Joe Russo explained to CBM:

“It's fascinating how malleable he is playing that role, and the range that he has. He has a wide array of directors with different tastes and different tones that have interpreted the character. We have a specific point of view on that character. That's what we're going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor.”

That gives us a pretty clear idea of where the Russos are taking Thor in Doomsday. Hemsworth started out playing Thor as a much more serious character before Taika Waititi pushed him heavily into comedy with Thor: Ragnarok and later Thor: Love and Thunder.

The Russos found a different balance with the character in Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, mixing his personality and humor with a much heavier emotional journey.

It sounds like Doomsday will lean back toward the hardened warrior we saw in Infinity War. That version of Thor had lost his home, his family, and eventually Loki, leaving him consumed by his need to kill Thanos.

According to Russo, that struggle will continue when Thor enters the fight against Doctor Doom.

“We love that sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle. Will he ever find it or not? That is the journey he will go on against the greatest foe he's ever met. As you can see from the trailers, it's going to be a hell of a fight.”

In the footage released for Avengers: Doomsday, Thor goes after Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom with some serious force, only for Doom to stop his attack with a two fingers.

Thor has fought Thanos, Hela, Gorr, Ultron, Malekith, and plenty of other insanely powerful enemies over the years, but the Russos are describing Doctor Doom as the greatest opponent he's faced. Watching Thor deal with an enemy capable of making his strength look almost meaningless puts him in a very different place.

Doomsday will most definitley give Hemsworth some heavier material after the comedy-driven approach of Love and Thunder. Whether that means Thor's story is approaching its end remains to be seen, but with Hemsworth having played the character since 2011, it's hard not to wonder how much road he has left in the MCU.

Thor also appears positioned to have a major role despite the enormous Doomsday cast, which brings together multiple groups of Marvel heroes for the battle against Doom.

Whatever happens, bringing back this more serious version of Thor feels like an exciting direction for the character. Hopefully he makes it out of this one alive.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18, 2026.
