THE SHINING Is Coming to IMAX for the First Time Ever

Get ready to experience one of the most haunting films ever made in a whole new way. Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece The Shining is heading to IMAX for the very first time, giving fans the chance to get lost in the eerie halls of the Overlook Hotel on a truly massive scale.

I’ve never seen the film on the big screen, so this will be the first time for me, and it’s pretty awesome that it will be in IMAX.

IMAX announced that The Shining will hit its giant screens on December 12, marking the first time the 1980 classic will ever be shown in this format. While most horror fans would have loved to spend Halloween with Jack Torrance and the ghosts of Room 237, it looks like this experience will arrive just in time for blizzard season instead.

Tickets aren’t on sale yet, but IMAX has launched an official web page where you can sign up for updates. Details about any remastering or restoration have yet to be confirmed. IMAX hasn’t shared specifics about what exactly will be new or updated for this re-release.

Considering Kubrick’s meticulous attention to detail and the film’s long-standing legacy, this IMAX version is likely to preserve the original cut, simply optimized for the giant screen. Most fans have watched The Shining countless times at home, and no one has seen it in IMAX until now.

So why release this film in December? Looking at IMAX’s upcoming schedule, there’s a small gap between major releases like Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 in late November and Avatar: Fire and Ash arriving mid-December. That leaves a little window for Kubrick’s classic to take over theaters before the holidays.

A snowstorm-filled nightmare in the middle of December somehow feels just right for the Torrance family’s descent into madness.

The Shining is a cornerstone of cinematic terror. From Jack Nicholson’s unforgettable performance to Kubrick’s hypnotic direction and Stephen King’s chilling story, it’s a film that gets under your skin and stays there.

The atmosphere, the slow-building dread, and that unforgettable score create a sense of unease that few movies have ever matched. It’s psychological horror at its finest, and seeing it in IMAX will only amplify every sinister whisper and echoing hallway.

IMAX’s The Shining event promises to be a can’t-miss moment for horror fans and film lovers alike. Whether you’re revisiting the Overlook Hotel or checking in for the first time, it’s going to be an experience worth braving the cold for.

Keep an eye on IMAX’s official site for ticket updates. Until then, don’t lose your way in the maze.
