The Shocking True Crime Story of The "Dexter Killer" is Being Made Into a Film From The Producer of FACE/OFF

David Permut, the producer of films such as Face/Off and Hacksaw Ridge has acquired the right to Steve Lillbuen’s true crime book The Devil’s Cinema and he will be adapting that into a feature film.

The book tells the shocking true story of Canadian filmmaker Mark Twitchell who was convicted of first-degree murder in 2011 and was referred to as the “Dexter Killer” in the press due to the nature of the murder.

Twitchell lured a man named John Brian Altinger into a “kill room” set up in his garage-turned-film-studio. “Twitchell bludgeoned and stabbed Altinger, before cutting him apart and then dumping his remains in garbage bags.” The way he killed Altinger was inspired by the hit TV series Dexter.

The movie will be written and directed by Sam Hobkinson, who previously worked on the true-crime doc Kleptocrats, the Netflix feature Misha And The Wolves, and Netflix’s mob series Fear City.

Permut said in a statement: “Sam Hobkinson’s interpretations of true crime stories have had such cinematic flair and style in his extraordinary and critically acclaimed work in documentaries. I think we have found the perfect filmmaker to capture this riveting and cinematic story.”

Hobkinson described the project as “an immersive thriller, that lives in the uneasy world between fact and fiction, a movie that will place the audience in a world that becomes terrifyingly real.”

This crazy tragic story will be featured later this month on an upcoming episode of CBS’s true crime series 48 Hours.
