The Showrunner of Netflix's THE WITCHER Series Says She Has Seven Seasons Planned
If you’re excited about Netflix’s upcoming live-action series adaptation of The Witcher and you like what you’ve seen of it so far, you’ll be happy to learn that showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is planning to keep the show rolling for at least seven seasons!
In a recent interview with SFX magazine (via Games Radar), Hissrich was asked about her plans, and she excitedly said, “Oh hell, yeah! Second season? I’ve done it for seven seasons!" Obviously, each of those seasons needs to end up being greenlit by Netflix. She goes on to say:
"We don’t have a second season yet – God willing we will – but right now it’s just about, ‘How do you set up stories that really capture audiences for years at a time?’ The worst thing we could do is put all of our energies just into season one, and not be thinking about where these characters can grow to.”
She goes on to reveal that not all of the characters from The Witcher books will make it into the first season, and adds, "I can’t promise you that they’re all very much alive.” She goes on to talk about the "really human stories" being told in the series, saying:
“Yes there are monsters, and yes, there will be a lot of blood – but there’s also a family coming together. To me, that really has been the theme of the first season: ‘What makes a family? how does a family find each other? Why are they meant to be together?’ People who may not think they are fantasy fans will come and find that they are.”
I’m excited for the series! I think it looks great. I know some people have complained about the production looking cheap. I personally don’t see that, but even if it does look cheap to some, remember, the most important aspect of this is the story! If they tell the story right and it’s a well-written show, that’s what matters the most. Watch it for the story, and if you don’t like the story, then you don’t need to watch it.
Henry Cavill stars in the series as Geralt, and he is joined by Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) as Yennefer and Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds, Into The Badlands) as Ciri. All of them seem like perfect choices for the roles they play, and I can’t wait to watch this show!
