The Spider-Man Spinoff Shows Are a "Huge Focus" For Sony and Prime Video

Sony TV and Amazon Prime Video previously teamed up to produce several Spider-Man spin-off series that will not be separate from the cinematic universe. One of the first of these projects that have been announced is Silk: Spider Society which is being written and produced by The Walking Dead's Angela Kang, who will also serve as showrunner.

During a recent interview with Deadline, Sony executive Katherine Pope revealed that these Spider-Man spinoffs they’re developing are a "huge focus" and shared her excitement for the Silk series, saying:

"It's a huge focus certainly for all of us here, and for me in particular. I was already a fan of Angela Kang, so I'm really, really excited to be working with her on Silk. She's just brilliant and a total pro. This is also an example of working really closely with Tom Rothman and Sanford Panitch, and the motion picture group, to make sure that we are in lockstep with them and also executing at the same level. They've done such an incredible job with that franchise, so we want to make sure we're executing at that level."

Kang previously talked about jumping on board the Silk series, saying: "I'm beyond thrilled to be joining the Amazon Studios family for this next chapter of my career. I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, character-forward, watercooler shows for a global audience and am so excited to dive into my first challenge-bringing Korean-American superhero Silk to life on screen.”

Silk is a fan-favorite character that was created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, and she made her comic book debut in 2014 in The Amazing Spider-Man vol. 3 #1. For those of you not familiar with Cindy Moon, a.k.a. Silk, here's a little background information:

Thirteen years ago, during a demonstration on the use of radioactive rays at a science exhibit, a spider was accidentally exposed to the radiation and absorbed large amounts of it. In its dying moments, the arachnid bit the nearest living thing to it, Peter Parker. As a result, the young teenager would gain amazing powers and become the amazing Spider-Man!

However, this was not the end; as mere moments after biting Parker, the spider bites another young student by the name of Cindy Moon.

Soon after, Cindy’s abilities manifested but she was unable to control them. Some time later, Ezekiel would approach the Moon family to offer his help and guide Cindy in controlling her newfound abilities. After six years since getting bit and training to use her powers, Cindy is locked up inside a facility by Ezekiel to protect her, and the other “spiders,” from Morlun.

Silk is such a cool Spider-Man character and I hope that this series ends up being awesome!
