The Story For CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLIDER Originally Opened with a WWII Battle
Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier almost had a very different opening than the one we got. I loved the opening of the film, and to this day, it’s still probably my favorite film in the MCU. It was just such a well-made movie with a great story.
During a recent interview with the ReelBlend podcast, director Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that their original plan for the opening of the story would have featured Captain America in the heat of battle during World War II. They explain:
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier actually opened with a battle during World War II, in one of the drafts. That was a massive battle that ended with a significant moment for Cap, that then fed into the story. And then we ended up cutting back about two months before shooting.”
It would have been fascinating to see or know what it was that made this a significant moment for Cap. They don’t reveal what it is in the interview! It’s hard not to wonder about what we missed out on with this opening. But I can’t complain, the movie ended up being perfect, and it all led to an epic conclusion, the likes of which we won’t see again happen for a very long time.
