THE SUICIDE SQUAD Director James Gunn Wrote Bloodsport Specifically for Idris Elba

In a recent tweet shared by director James Gunn, he explains that he rarely writes roles for actors that he’s never met. But, that’s exactly what he did for Idris Elba as the character Bloodsport in DC’s The Suicide Squad.

Gunn said in the tweet, "I rarely write roles for actors I've never met, but I did exactly that for [Idris Elba] in [The Suicide Squad] [and] couldn't be happier I did - you went beyond my expectations as an actor AND as a human being. I can't wait for folks to see you as [Bloodsport]."

It's pretty cool that the filmmaker specifically wrote Bloodsport for Elba. If the director had never met Elba prior to writing the script, then Elba obviously hadn’t been cast in the film yet. So, Gunn must’ve initially wrote the script really hoping that Elba would take the role!

The full roster of characters also includes Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Steve Agee as King Shark, and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, Nathan Fillion is T.D.K., Mayling Ng as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Steve Agee as King Shark, John Cena as Peacemaker, Joaquín Cosío as Mayor General Mateo Suarez, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Storm Reid as Bloodsport's daughter, Tyla, and more. Taika Waititi will also be in the film, but his character is not included in this video.

As we’ve seen in the behind-the-scenes video, The Suicide Squad looks like it’s going to be a totally awesome movie, and I can’t wait to see it when it lands in theaters in 2021.
