THE SUICIDE SQUAD Originally Featured a Superman Storyline, and James Gunn Hasn't Ruled Out Using it in the Future

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad had an expansive cast that included some really fun DC characters that had never been brought to the screen, but Gunn says that one of his original story ideas included one very well-known DC character, the Man of Steel. Yes, Superman was in one of the early storylines that didn’t end up coming to fruition, but Gunn hasn’t ruled out making that story in the future.

In a recent interview with German outlet Filmstarts (via CB), Gunn explained:

"When I started writing The Suicide Squad, one idea was that they would fight Superman. The Suicide Squad has to catch Superman for some reason. That was all, just a vague idea. It's gotten out of hand or is being controlled by someone. And then this group of lousy super villains has to face the most powerful hero in the world."

James Gunn is still pretty excited by the prospect of a Suicide Squad vs. Superman storyline, even to the point that he is vocal about letting Warner Bros. know they should not pursue the concept without him:

"I like this idea and if DC does this sequel, then please not without me."

David Ayer's Suicide Squad opened with the world reacting to Superman's death in Batman v Superman - a loss that prompted Amanda Waller to form Task Force X, in order to deter metahuman threats to America. So it could be really interesting seeing the squad face off against the reason they were created. And if Gunn were the director behind it, fans would surely be on board.

Is this a story idea you’d like to see explored on the big screen?
