The TRAIN TO BUSAN Sequel PENINSULA Won't Actually Be a Sequel; Here Are Some New Details

A couple of months ago we learned that the hit South Korean zombie movie Train To Busan was going to get a sequel this summer. The film is titled Peninsula, and the director of the original film, Yeon Sang-ho, has been developing the film.

Thanks to ScreenDaily, we’ve now learned that the movie isn’t actually a sequel, but the follow-up film will be set in the same universe. Sang-ho told the site:

“Peninsula is not a sequel to Train To Busan because it’s not a continuation of the story, but it happens in the same universe.”

The site also shared a synopsis for the film, which is as follows:

Peninsula takes place four years after the outbreak of zombies that were chasing protagonists on a train speeding south to Busan. The Korean peninsula is devastated and Jung-seok, a former soldier who has managed to escape overseas, is given a mission to go back and unexpectedly meets up with survivors.

I actually like the fact that this new film is going to tell a completely different story involving a whole new set of characters. They seem to be treating this as an anthology franchise, and I like that! Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later film series did the same thing.

Peninsula is currently in post-production and has already sold to the North American distributor Well Go USA along with other distributors from around the world. The first film made such an impact that there’s a lot of hype for this sequel. If you haven’t watched the first film yet, you really need to check it out! You won’t be disappointed.
