The Upcoming HELLRAISER Reboot Finds a Writer and Director
Spyglass is moving forward with its reboot of Clive Barker’s 1987 jacked-up horror movie Hellraiser. The production company has hired David Bruckner to helm the movie. He directed a great horror movie that I saw at Sundance this year titled The Night House. He also directed the 2007 sci-fi horror film The Signal.
It’s great to see the filmmaker land a new directing gig, but I’d much rather see him direct another original horror movie. As for the script, it’s being written by David Goyer, who has worked on several DC films over the years. Goyer’s work is usually good when he’s working with good filmmakers.
The original movie told the story of a man “who inadvertently opens a portal to hell when he tinkers with a strange puzzle box he bought during a trip abroad. The act unleashes gruesome beings called Cenobites, creatures from Hell.” That includes Pinhead, who’s the most sinister and who has also become the face of Hellraiser.
According to THR, this Hellraiser reboot was described as being “loyal, yet evolved.” Blumhouse was considering making a remake of Hellraiser at one point and there were also reports that it would be developed as a TV series. I assume that’s not happening anymore.
What are your thoughts on Barker’s Hellraiser getting rebooted? The original film was pretty insane and there’s really no need to remake it. But, Spyglass believes the property will make them a lot of money.
