THE WALKING DEAD Bosses Tease the Show's Future in Celebration of Its 15th Anniversary
The Walking Dead premiered on AMC in 2010 to a huge fan response unlike any before in the genre. The series was a fresh take on the zombie story, focusing on the people who survived an apocalyptic event that turned their fellow human beings into “walkers” hungry for brains.
As they tried to find others who could rebuild civilization and a new life together, we saw them encounter dangerous foes, fall in love, and lose friends and loved ones in unprecedented situations. It was captivating and exciting, and it held our attention for eleven seasons before ending the flagship series and spawning a handful of spinoffs.
But with the offshoot shows also coming to their own natural ends, does this mean the whole Walking Dead universe is concluding? Not according to the show’s writer, executive producer and steward, Scott Gimple. In a recent retrospective panel on the franchise at Mipcom to mark the 15th anniversary of the show, AMC Networks president Dan McDermott said of the show’s future:
“It’s quite possible we could see this group up here 15 years from now. There are many more continents to visit. It’s about how [the characters] evolve over time. It’s really exciting to see how far we can take this.”
Gimple added that taking “Walking Dead” stalwart characters to new lands such as France and Spain, like in the Daryl Dixon spinoff starring Norman Reedus, opens up a treasure box of storytelling possibilities. “In a lot of ways, [the locations] give the story to us,” Gimple said.
Gimple likened the storytelling possibilities to the intricate canon of stories and characters assembled by DC and Marvel in the comic book realm.
“It was all one story. It went in all sorts of different directions,” Gimple said. “Even with characters who have done so many things, we can put them in different worlds where they have different challenges and evolve them through these challenges.”
I don’t know what the future holds for the Walking Dead universe, but if they could tell a story that begins with the original timeline, but with new people in a new place, I think that might be interesting. Are there any stories you’d like to see explored?
