THE WALKING DEAD Creator Robert Kirkman Seemingly Reveals How the Zombie Virus Started
In all the years that The Walking Dead has been around, it has never been revealed what it was that started the zombie apocalypse. It was never mentioned in the comic books, the TV series, the video games, or any of the other media.
Well, while creator Robert Kirkman has said in past interviews that he didn't intend to answer what caused the zombie outbreak, he finally took to Twitter to reveal the cause of the infection. When a fan asked him "what caused the zombies," Kirkman responded with the following two words, "Space spore.”
So, the infection came from outer space! I guess that makes sense. It would be another homage to George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead, where scientists speculated the rise of flesh-eating zombies was caused by radiation from a space probe to Venus.
Of course, it’s up for debate on if Kirkman is being serious with his answer. He could be joking, but at this point, it doesn’t really matter. He’s already ended the comic book series, and I don’t think it’ll ever be revealed in any of the series. So, if that’s what he wants it to be, that’s what it cam be.
The reason the zombies exist isn’t important, what is important are the stories that Kirkman told in this post-apocalyptic setting.
