AMC’s long-running series The Walking Dead faced the unusual year we had with adjustments to the way the series is shown, first having to push back the Season 10 finale, then deciding to extend the end of the season by returning in 2021 with an additional six episodes. Next up, they are looking to give fans a super-sized 11th season with 24 episodes that will span across 2021 and 2022. But the format isn’t the only thing that is brand new. The show is looking to tell new stories and cover new ground.

According to executive producer Scott Gimple in a behind-the-scenes video released by FOX TV UK (via CB), the final season of the flagship series will be "something unlike you've seen on the show before." Pointing to the cliffhanger ending of the episode “A Certain Doom," where Eugene (Josh McDermitt) arrived at the rendezvous with unseen radio contact Stephanie (Margot Bingham), and was captured with Ezekial (Khary Payton), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura) and newcomer, Princess, played by Paola Lazaro, viewers were introduced to the militant new group The Commonwealth. Showrunner Angela Kang said, "We've met a new group, and they certainly seem to be very capable, very well-equipped. So that will send us into our next story."

The crew will return in the episode “Splinter” in the back end of Season 10, returning February 28th, so we can find out what happens to them after they are captured by the Commonwealth. Gimple excitedly said of the final 30 episodes, "After ten years of The Walking Dead, to see the show continue to evolve, to say, 'We're going to show you something unlike you've seen on the show before,' it's a wonderful thing."

I’m still excited to see what will happen in this series. I am looking forward to the final episodes, as well as the upcoming Daryl/Carol spin-off, and the anthology spin-off. But I am most looking forward to the continuation of the Rick Grimes storyline, and I can’t wait to hear more about the movies that will take us there.

Are you looking forward to the new season’s storyline?
