THE WIRE's Dominic West Will Play Lara Croft's Father in New TOMB RAIDER Movie
Dominic West, who will forever be associated with his role as Detective Jimmy McNulty on HBO's The Wire, has been cast as Lara Croft's father in Tomb Raider, the new film starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander that went into production earlier this week.
The film follows Lara Croft as she sets out on her first expedition to finish her father's research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name.
Croft’s father, Lord Richard Croft, is a key figure in the Raider mythos and is an aristocrat and archeologist. (Jon Voight played the character in the Angelina Jolie-starring Raider movies.)
I can totally see West playing an adventuring archeologist. There are a number of ways they could go with this: showing him in action in flashbacks, having him interact with Lara in present day through dreams or daydreams, have him appear only in pre-recorded video diaries that Lara studies for clues, etc. Either way, he strikes me as excellent casting, and since he's a natural born Englishman (something you never would have known if you'd just seen him as McNulty), that should align well with Vikander's posh accent.
Here's an interesting piece of trivia: the outlet also points out that this isn't the first time that West will be playing Vikander's father in a movie: he did the same thing in the 2014 war drama Testament of Youth.
Tomb Raider is being directed by Roar Uthaug and also stars Walton Goggins and Daniel Wu. It's slated for release on March 16, 2018.
