THE X-FILES Creator Chris Carter Addresses The Continuing Adventures of Mulder and Scully
The X-Files is one of those iconic shows that fans continue to talk about and want more of. It would actually be very relevant today with how some of the conspiracy theories presented in the original series ended up being true in real life. With everything happening now with how the government is handling things, admitting there are things out there beyond their understanding, I’d be curious to see how Mulder and Scully would respond to it.
The question is, will we ever see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their roles for a continuation of the series? I think it’s possible, but unlikely. The show’s creator, Chris Carter, is even seemingly uninterested in doing more with the franchise, unless the original stars were involved. During an interview with The Wrap, Carter was asked if he’s interested in the continuing adventures of Mulder and Scully, and he said:
"Oh, if David and Gillian wanted to do it again. Yeah, probably, then I would be inspired."
While Duchovny has said he’s always up for more X-Files, Anderson has said several times that she’s done with it. But, she did say she would be open to returning under the right circumstances:
“It just feels like such an old idea. I’ve done it, I did it for so many years, and it also ended on such an unfortunate note,’ referring to Scully’s pregnancy reveal. ‘In order to even begin to have that conversation [about another season] there would need to be a whole new set of writers and the baton would need to be handed on for it to feel like it was new and progressive. So yeah, it’s very much in the past.”
Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is currently developing an X-Files series of his own. There are no details to share on that, but Carter has given the project his blessing. Whatever Coogler has planned, I hope he does something awesome with the franchise, something that fans can appreciate and get behind.
