I’m a huge fan of the original X-Files series and I even enjoyed the revival seasons that we ended up getting. One thing that I was a little disappointed about, was that there were plot threads involving Agent Dana Scully in Season 11 that were left unresolved. Actress Gillian Anderson has made it clear on multiple occasions that she’s not interested in returning for the role again.

The X-Files creator Chris Carter recently apologized for the plot threads that were left unresolved in Season 11, knowing that Anderson wasn't interested in returning for a Season 12. Carter shared with The Conspiracy Podcast, per Den of Geek:

“Skinner, Mulder, Scully, and William’s stories are still unresolved. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to do that. Being that Gillian has decided to move on with her career, we certainly couldn’t do Mulder and Scully again. But that’s not to say there isn’t another way to do the X-Files. And so right now I think the future is unwritten.”

In case you don’t remember, in Season 11 it was revealed that William, who we believed to be Scully and Mulder's son, was actually the result of the Cigarette-Smoking Man drugging Scully and impregnating her. A lot of fans weren’t happy about this, even Anderson hinted that she didn’t care for the direction of the story.

Carter explained that the fans who were disappointed with those surprising reveals were slightly out of touch with the overall intentions of the series, and said:

“There were some objections to the [Cigarette-Smoking Man] and his connections to William. I can tell you that people who objected never asked me the right questions in the end.”

I would actually love to see The X-Files continue, I would like to get some closure on the story and the unresolved threads from the last season. I would also love to see a prequel series that focuses on Agent Mulder’s early days as an FBI agent.

Carter is currently working on developing an animated X-Files project and he hopes that Anderson will at least return to provide the voice of Scully. I hope she does return, but, we’ll just have to wait and see.

What are your hopes for the future of the franchise?
