There's a DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Character That Was Adapted For The New SHE-RA Animated Series
If you're a fan of Dungeons & Dragons and the He-Man franchise, you might be happy to hear that there's a D&D character that will be included in DreamWorks and Netflix's new She-Ra and the Princesses of Power animated series.
Noelle Stevenson is developing the series and it turns out that she's also been playing a lot of D&D since she's been working on it. During a recent panel at Flame Con, Stevenson talked about playing D&D and described the first character that she created for it as a "Tiefling warlock nightmare baby." She goes on to explains that "she was a teenager who sold her soul to the devil to make her mom mad."
The Tiefling is also a teleporter, so when Stevenson found she was dealing with a character on She-Ra who shared that same ability, she decided to play with that character in the D&D world to flesh it out. She goes on to joke, "I steal a lot from characters I’ve made from D&D."
Stevenson goes on to explain that her Tiefling character had "Misty Step," which all of you familiar with D&D, know is having the ability for characters to teleport up to 30 feet to a location in their sight. But, she explains "I had two spell slots for Misty Step, so I got stuck a lot. I’d be like, ‘Guys, I can see through the key hole. I’m going in!’ and then would get attacked by something. 'I did not think this through!'"
It's those missteps which ended up becoming the basis for the character in She-Ra. The character is said to explore what happens "when someone who doesn’t have great impulse control is just like, 'I’m gonna go!' but then it’s like, ‘Oh no!'"
It's pretty awesome that Stevenson found inspiration in D&D to help her develop a character in She-Ra. It actually seems like a pretty good way of developing a character's personality. She goes on to say:
“I pull so much inspiration from [D&D]. Because how do you embody these characters? How do you embody it when you have a mission for these characters? And you go and you figure it out from there."
What do you all think of Stevenson using D&D to develop one of her characters for this upcoming She-Ra series?
She-Ra is voiced by Aimee Carrero (Elena of Avalor) in the series, Glimmer is voiced by Karen Fukuhara (Suicide Squad), Bow is voiced by Marcus Scribner (black-ish), and Catra is voiced by AJ Michalka (The Goldbergs).
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is the story of an orphan named Adora (Carrero), who leaves behind her former life in the evil Horde when she discovers a magic sword that transforms her into the mythical warrior princess She-Ra. Along the way, she finds a new family in the Rebellion as she unites a group of magical princesses in the ultimate fight against evil.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power will debut on November 16th on Netflix.
