There's a STAR TREK Animated Kids Series in Development at Nickelodeon

It looks like the Star Trek universe will expand beyond CBS All Access with a new animated series for kids being produced for Nickelodeon. The animation studio is currently in negotiations with CBS Television Studios to make this happen.

There are no details on the plot, but the show is being developed by writers Kevin and Dan Hageman, who are best known for their work on animated shows such as Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu and Trollhunters. They also worked on films such as Hotel Transylvania, The LEGO Movie, and The LEGO Ninjago Movie.

If this project moves forward it will be the first new Star Trek TV series produced outside of CBS All Access, and it will be a big deal for Nickelodeon.

This project was previously teased by producer Alex Kurtzman, who said the series will be “kids-focused” and could potentially land somewhere outside of CBS All Access. This is on top of the adult animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, which is being developed by Rick and Morty head writer and executive producer Mike McMahan. That series is said to focus on “the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships.”

When talking about these animated Star Trek shows, Kurtzman said:

“There’s other animated things that we’re building that are an entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone [from Lower Decks]. What’s exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what’s the different tone, but what’s the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they’re entirely different?”

It’ll be interesting to see what comes of this kids animated Star Trek series. If it happens, I hope that it turns out to be good for the sake of the kids and the franchise! You’ve got to make a good first impression on these kids if you want to get them hooked on Star Trek at a young age!
