There's a STREET FIGHTER TV Series is in the Works

Deadline brings us news that Entertainment One has scored a deal that allows them to make and finance a Street Fighter TV series. The executive producers include Joey Ansah, Jacqueline Quella, and Mark Wooding who worked on the web series Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist. Reportedly, the story will revolve around the World Warrior arc from Street Fighter II: The World Warrior and will focus on Ryu, Ken, Guile, and Chun-Li. They will work together to bring down the evil M. Bison (Vega if you play the Japanese version) who runs the global criminal organization Shadaloo. Bison is trying to find the most powerful fighter, so he throws the World Warrior Tournament. President of Entertainment One, Mark Gordon, said in the announcement:

Street Fighter is a global tour de force franchise, having garnered immense worldwide commercial success and built a vast devoted fanbase that has only grown through its 30 year legacy. We are thrilled to be teaming up with Joey, Jacqueline and Mark, who are already so deeply connected to this brand, to bring this adored story to television audiences everywhere. A particular strength of Street Fighter is the wide range of ethnically diverse characters and powerful women featured in the game. It will allow us to build an inclusive and engaging TV universe.

Wow, Gordon is already planning on using this to build a TV universe. I am extremely hesitant about this show. I think it could be fun for hardcore fans, but I question its appeal to a wide audience. Of course, information is scarce as to who will star in the show, where it will premiere, and when it will premiere. Who knows, maybe this is exactly the kind of show I’ve been waiting for my entire life. Let the fan-casting begin, and where do you think it will be released? Netflix? Hulu? HBO?
