There's an AKIRA Anime Sequel Coming From Creator Katsuhiro Otomo
For those of you who have always wondered what happened after the events of Akira, creator Katsuhiro Otomo is going to continue the story! During the Anime Expo, Otomo announced that he is developing an anime sequel series that he will write and direct!
Bandai Namco’s Sunrise will produce the series. There aren’t many details regarding the project, but it was explained that this new take will stick more closely to his original story while adding some key points that were not featured in the 1988 film.
It’ll be interesting to see what this sequel series ends up being and what aspects of the original story will be incorporated. The original Akira source material that the first movie is based on includes six volumes so there’s a lot that wasn’t used in the 1988 film to pull from.
If the upcoming live-action adaptation of the of the original film being developed by Taika Waititi turns out to be a hit, maybe WB will want to eventually adapt this sequel as well.
It was also revealed that there is going to be a 4K remaster of the iconic original anime, and that is set to arrive on April 24, 2020. You can watch a trailer for that below.
