There's Nothing Wrong With These 10 Movie Technologies That Look Dated Today

HumorMovie by Ben Pearson

When John Carpenter directed Escape From New York back in 1981 and set it in a post-apocalyptic 1997, he probably didn't give a crap that years later, the tech he used (which must have looked pretty cool at the time) wouldn't necessarily hold up. Filmmakers shouldn't care about stuff like that — they should be concentrating on telling the best story they can in the best way possible, and if that means using computer generated sequences to help them out, then so be it. There are plenty of awful-looking CG beats in older movies that still work wonderfully today, and as long as you keep in mind the time period in which the movie was made, if it's a good movie, the story will still work despite weird-looking technology.

WatchMojo's list of 10 movie technologies that look hilariously dated today sort of sneers at these movies, which I think is the wrong way to approach this whole thing. There's nothing funny about Blade Runner's video phone. But I guess listers gotta list. Amy Nicholson of the L.A. Weekly wrote a good piece recently that deals with a similar topic, and I'd encourage you to check it out.
