This Original STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Poster Gives Darth Vader a Surprisingly Different Look

One of those characters is Darth Vader, especially with his unmistakable helmet and costume. He has one of the most recognizable character designs ever created, and fans can spot it from across a room.
That's why stumbling across an early promotional poster for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back that gives Darth Vader a noticeably different look is such a fun surprise.
A fan recently shared the poster on Reddit, and it appears to be one of the early teaser pieces that studios sent to theaters before the movie's release. There's no release date printed on it, suggesting it was designed as a simple "coming soon" poster to build anticipation before audiences knew much about the sequel.
The artwork features Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, C-3PO, R2-D2, a squad of Stormtroopers, and an especially confident-looking Lando Calrissian. But there's no question about who dominates the composition.
Vader towers over everyone else with his glowing red lightsaber... except something about him stands out. Instead of the familiar flowing cape fans know so well, it almost looks like he's wearing a poncho.
It's kind of amusing when you see it, but the artist was most likely depicting Vader's cape wrapped around his body rather than hanging behind him. That approach also conveniently hides many of the control panels and gadgets built into his armor, which may have been difficult to capture in this hand-painted style.
Oddly enough, it works. The different presentation doesn't make Vader look any less intimidating. If anything, it gives him an even more mysterious, looming presence.
