This SPIDER-MAN Trilogy's Creators Were Sure They Didn't Want to Rehash the Death of Uncle Ben
This Spider-Man trilogy was unlike the one-and-a-half that came before it in many ways. It was the first to play into the greater Marvel comic universe, teaming up with The Avengers and helping citizens through the events of Thanos’s snap and its subsequent reversal. This was also the first big screen version of Peter Parker’s story that didn’t include the storyline in which he had to face the death of his Uncle Ben. There wasn’t even an uncle written into the story this time around, and in a recent Tweet, Spider-Man: Homecoming writer Jonathan Goldstein commented on the choice, saying:
Spider-Man star Tom Holland previously told UPROXX in a 2019 interview that he felt that Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark filled the role of father figure for Peter Parker that was left open by the absence of Uncle Ben:
I think he was very, very much took on the mantle as his father figure, and losing him is a huge blow to Peter Parker obviously. And that's what's so nice about Mysterio kind of flying in is that he can fill those shoes a little bit and be Peter Parker's mentor and his big brother at the same time."
Well that didn’t turn out as planned, but good for Holland. He didn’t spoil the ending of Far From Home. He went on to add:
"Yeah, that was always the biggest hurdle, you know. It's so daunting being the next chapter following the behemoth movie that is Endgame and the ramifications of that tragic, tragic event. It's incredibly exciting as well. I feel like the Russo brothers teed us up for a really exciting film and Jon Watts knocked it out the park. I'm just really excited and proud to see it, because I feel like we're giving the fans an opportunity to grieve through Peter Parker."
There was definitely more than enough to grieve over the Endgame arc, and it was nice to see Peter Parker in a new story that had fans guessing. This next movie looks like it’s going to be incredibly exciting, and we are only a week away now! Get your tickets now to see Spider-Man: No Way Home in theaters next week.
