This Video Game-Style Short Film JUMPY Gives Us Hope in These Dark Times
Some days can be rough. Things aren't exactly the way you want them to be. Sometimes you try and try and try but keep failing. But you keep trying. That's what this video game-inspired short film, Jumpy, is about.
When I first looked at it, I thought, that the background graphics and the outside the game graphics were good, but Jumpy himself wasn't much to look at. Too simple in my mind. Is he a bunny or something else? And it shows him jump and he does pretty well in the player's hands until he reaches a point he just can't jump. Spoilers from here on out.
Yeah, I know it's a short video, but I'm still going to warn you because this video makes choices you wouldn't expect.
It showed Jumpy trying and trying and failing, even when others were able to pass with different skills, he just never can succeed. I really began to empathize with him. The other people all passed on and did these great things, while Jumpy just kept not quite reaching his goals. Even beginning to fail at other parts he had no problem with and getting frustrated. And then the video did something I expected and didn't.
The others came back for Jumpy and made a bridge for him and it was at this moment, I was pissed. I didn't want help from the others. I mean, Jumpy didn't want help. I was so frustrated that the video was going to take the friendship route and be about teamwork. And then... it didn't. Jumpy kept trying to jump instead of take their help. He wanted to do it himself! He kept dying and the gamer tried to take the bridge instead of jumping but Jumpy kept trying. I was with him until the end. This video got me. If you read this far and still haven't watched it, I won't tell you how it ends. Just watch it. It brings me joy.
We are all Jumpy.
