Tilda Swinton Rumored to Play Voldemort in HBO’s HARRY POTTER TV Series

A wild new casting rumor is making the rounds and it’s one that Harry Potter fans can’t stop debating. According to a recent report from Deadline, HBO may be circling a truly unexpected choice to play the Dark Lord in its upcoming Harry Potter TV series.

The name gaining the most traction online is Tilda Swinton, the legendary actor best known to genre fans for playing the Ancient One in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The report notes that Swinton has become a popular fan-driven rumor for Voldemort, and it’s easy to see why the idea has caught fire. Her career is packed with strange, powerful, and unsettling performances, and she has a rare ability to completely disappear into roles that feel otherworldly.

While HBO hasn’t confirmed anything, the possibility alone has sparked plenty of conversation about how different this take on Voldemort could feel compared to what came before.

Production on the Harry Potter series officially began last summer, but the actor playing the franchise’s main villain remains a mystery. Ralph Fiennes famously portrayed Voldemort in the original film series, delivering a version of the character that’s now deeply embedded in pop culture.

Whoever takes on the role this time will inevitably be compared, which makes the casting choice especially important.

This new adaptation is shaping up to be a massive undertaking for HBO. The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

They’re joined by an impressive supporting cast that includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The ensemble continues with Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic.

The series is written by Francesca Gardiner, whose previous work includes Killing Eve and Succession. Gardiner is also executive producing alongside Mark Mylod, J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and longtime Harry Potter producer David Heyman.

Mylod will direct multiple episodes after previously working with HBO on Game of Thrones and The Last of Us. The show is produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.

If the rumor about Swinton turns out to be true, it would signal a very different approach to Voldemort, one that could lean more eerie and unpredictable than what audiences have seen before. For now, it’s all speculation.
