Time Jump Confirmed For THE WALKING DEAD Season 9 and it Will Strengthen Women Characters

When The Walking Dead Season 9 starts it's going to launch the series in a whole new direction. It’s probably going to be very different than what fans are used to and that's a good thing. The series needs a little boost of something different.

There has been speculation for a while that there would be a time jump when Season 9 hits and now that has been confirmed. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that there would be a time jump because there was one in Robert Kirkman’s comic series.

During a recent panel, "The Kick-Ass Women of AMC," The Walking Dead's new showrunner Angela Kang opened up about the upcoming season for the first time, saying:

“We're working on a season that has a really fresh look and feel. We're playing with time in this season, so we get to kind of jump forward in the story."

She doesn’t say how much of a time jump there will be so that will be interesting to see. I wonder if it will jump as far ahead as to see Rick’s daughter Judith as a young woman. Growing up in this kind of world, there’s no doubt she’d grow up to be a badass. The show is definitely looking to reinvent itself. Kang goes on to say:

"We come in [to season nine] on some really fun stuff. I'm really focusing a lot on the core character relationships in the show that have kind of been long lasting as well as servicing all of our wonderful series' regulars."

We know that this will be Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan's last season in the role of Rick and Maggie. New leaders are going to rise up and we've heard that one of those leaders that will fill Rick's shoes will be Daryl, but there will be others. It sounds like there will be a spotlight put on the female characters this season. Kang goes on to say:

"I'm so humbled by the opportunity to work on a show that's been such a juggernaut and that is so beloved by millions of fans around the world. It's not lost on me that for a lot of women who watch the show and watch the strong women characters on the show, and dress up as those characters, people are looking for role models."

She goes on to say:

"We're going to see some really great stories with the women on our show, particularly. And I think for people who are really invested in say Michonne, Maggie, Carol, there's such great material for them as well as, of course, Rick and Daryl, and those other characters that we love, but for people who are looking for that specifically they will really see some incredible work from our women."

Kang highlighted one character in particular that is going to be interesting for fans to see:

“Yeah, we've got some really great moments and great stories for them. I think we're going to see Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh) in a way that people will be very surprised by seeing a different aspect of her character."

This is a mysterious and fascinating character in the series, now it sounds like she's going to get even more interesting.

There are a lot of big changes coming to The Walking Dead next season and I hope that it makes the show better and strengthens it because it really needs something special and cool to inject it with new life.

The Walking Dead will return for its ninth season in the fall.
