Titan Comics THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA Graphic Novel Will Leave You Wanting To Watch The Musical Again

Andrew Lloyd Weber’s The Phantom of the Opera is not only one of the most well known musicals in the world, but also the longest running at over 33 years now. The new graphic novel released by Titan Comics is a faithful adaptation of the musical. If you are somehow unfamiliar, here’s the synopsis:

In 1881 the cast and crew of a new production, Hannibal, are terrorized by the Phantom of the Opera, a mysterious, hideously disfigured man who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. Hopelessly in love and obsessed with one of the chorus singers, the Phantom will stop at nothing to make her the star of the show, even if that means murder.

Written by Cavan Scott and art by José María Beroy, this novel is beautiful. There are some truly stunning moments, such as when we transition from the auction into the beginning of the show or when Christine first enters the mirror into the Phantom’s domain. Beroy really captured the magic and monstrosity in the design for the Phantom, especially in the graveyard when he is imitating and actual ghost. Overall, I really enjoyed this graphic novel, but if you are unfamiliar with the music I would recommend listening to the soundtrack first so you can better enjoy the musical moments of the novel. Or you can listen to the music as you read to really put you in the story, but the novel does cut many songs short which is understandable given the written format. I would give this an 8/10, a great novel for fans of the musical.
