Toho's GODZILLA MINUS ONE Broke a Box Office Record

This past weekend, Toho released Godzilla Minus One in the United States, and for a Japanese film, it had an awesome debut and even broke a box office record. Godzilla Minus One pulled in $11 million in its domestic debut, giving it the all-time highest opening weekend for a Japanese live-action movie in U.S. theaters, which is pretty cool! The current worldwide total for Godzilla Minus One is $34.1 million.

I know it’s not a runaway hit, but the movie is, hands down, the best Godzilla movie that has ever been made, and I hope that people continue to experience the film on the big screen! While the movie is being considered a success, I’m sad that more people are watching those Legendary films that lack great storytelling and character development. I’m a Godzilla purist… what can I say?

The movie currently has a 96% critic score and a 98% audience score and it also has an A on CinemaScore. So, if you don’t trust me, trust all of the other reviews out there!

Toho’s Godzilla Minus One, written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, sees an already devastated post-World War II Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla.

The movie is set in Japan 1945-1947. “After the war, Japan has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state. Against the most desperate situation in the history of Japan, how — and with whom — will Japan stand up to it?”

The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki, with amazing music by Naoki Sato.
