Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie Are Still Developing Their "Gnarly" R-Rated Movie
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning writer and director Christopher McQuarrie has offered an update on an R-rated film project that he’s developing with Tom Cruise. The filmmaker previously talked about the film a few years ago saying: “It’s a very un-Tom character, and we have plans for an even more un-Tom character that we’ve been talking about, which I’m hopeful about in the future.”
McQuarrie recently shared an update on that project calling it ‘The Gnarly Movie’ and said they will start working on it after Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two: “There’s a movie that Cruise and I are talking about doing next or in some probable next, that Erik [Jendresen, writer] and I developed together – what has been referred to on the internet as ‘The Gnarly Movie’. It’s that movie that they’re all asking for, and that we want to do.”
Well, that sounds like it could be interesting! Tom Cruise playing a un-Tom character in a gnarly R-rated movie. I’m very curious to see what this ends up being. If this movie is the next one they are going to work together on, it looks like we’re going to have to wait for that movie that will blast Tom Cruise off into space.
When previously talking about how the project came about McQuarrie shared:
“Tom and I were talking about, had the series continued, to take Reacher to a place where, in the post-Deadpool, post-Joker world, Reacher could have been an R-rated movie and an R-rated franchise and really fed into the brutality of those books. We were fully ready to lean into that… The [Jack Reacher] stuff we’re talking about now is tinker toys [compared to it], I’m actually very, very excited.”
The last R-rated movie that Cruise starred in was American Made back in 2017. We don’t really have any more details on the project, but what do you think about Cruise going outside of the box for his next film after Dead Reckoning Part Two?
