Tom Cruise Returns His Three Golden Globes Amid Hollywood Foreign Press Association Diversity Protests and NBC Cancels 2022 Golden Globes

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been under a lot of scrutiny this week as a call to action has been brought forward by Hollywood’s elite, as well as streaming giants Netflix and Amazon. WarnerMedia has joined in cutting off ties with the HFPA, canceling the 2022 Golden Globes Awards on NBC, “due to their collective lack of confidence in the nonprofit group to enact serious systemic reform.” This comes after it was revealed just before this past February’s award ceremony that the HFPA has zero Black members.

In addition to the cancellation, Tom Cruise made headlines on Monday when he delivered his three Golden Globes back to HFPA headquarters. The three awards were the Best Actor he won for Jerry Maguire, the Best Actor he won for Born on the Fourth of July, and the Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia.

While this is a new action that hasn’t been done during this fight, it certainly could set a precedent with other actors who are protesting the organization.

As for the future of the Golden Globes, as long as the required changes are made, including a diversified overhaul to the membership of the HFPA, NBC will move forward in 2023. Here’s the statement from the Comcast-owned network:

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”
