Tom Cruise Will Be the First Civilian to Do a Spacewalk When He Shoots His Space Movie

It looks like Tom Cruise is going to become the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the International Space Station when he rockets into space to shoot the new action movie with director Doug Liman.

Of course, Cruise is going to spacewalk! I just assumed he was going to pilot the shuttle as well. The head of Universal Pictures, Donna Langley, teased this during a recent BBC interview, and said:

“Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.”

Langley went on to say that the movie “actually [mostly] takes place on Earth, and then the character needs to go up to space to save the day.” She then describes Cruise’s character as “a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth.”

This sounds like it’s going quite the wild ride, and it’s going to cost the studio around $200 million to bring it to life. I can’t wait to see how this turns out!

Liman and Cruise, who previously collaborated on films such as Edge of Tomorrow and American Made, are working with both NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX company to make this all happen.
