Tom Cruise's THE MUMMY Reboot Gets an Official Synopsis from Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures has released an official synopsis for Tom Cruise's upcoming reboot of The Mummy, which is currently in production in London. The Mummy is the first film in a new Monster cinematic universe that the studio is building and here's that synopsis:

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

I'm such a huge fan of these classic monsters, and I'm kind of nervous about the studio screwing these films up. I hate that they are set in modern day. It kind of takes some of the magic out of these classic monsters that many of us grew up with.

Cruise is also joined by Annabelle Wallis (Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, Annabelle), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), and Courtney B. Vance (American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson). Yesterday we learned that Russell Crowe was also in early talks to join the cast as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. The Mummy is being directed by Alex Kurtzman from a script written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).

Universal's monster cinematic universe also includes The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing, all of which are in various stages of development. The Mummy is set to be released on June 9th, 2017.
