Tom Hanks Is Heartbroken That His WWII Film GREYHOUND Isn't Being Released on the Big Screen

I’ll admit, I was a little bummed out to hear that Tom Hanks’ new World War II movie Greyhound was going to be released on Apple TV+ instead of in theaters. This is one of those movies that I would have loved to see and enjoy on the big screen, and in case you’re wondering how Hanks feels about the movie being released on a streaming service, he’s pretty bummed out as well.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, he was asked about Greyhound being released on Apple TV+ and he said it’s “an absolute heartbreak. I don’t mean to make angry my Apple overlords, but there is a difference in picture and sound quality.”

There’s a huge difference! Hanks not only stars in the film but he also wrote the script. This is a passion project for him that he spent almost 10 years developing with hopes of seeing it on the big screen, and now it’s set to premiere on Apple TV+.

Greyhound tells the true story of Capt Ernie Krause on his first wartime mission in the Battle of the Atlantic. When talking about playing this character, the actor points out that he’s had his fair share of playing captains in the films he stars in:

“Look, I’ve played a lot of captains. Capt Jim Lovell [in Apollo 13]; Capt Richard Phillips [in Captain Phillips]; Capt Sully Sullenberger [in Sully]; Capt Miller in Saving Private Ryan. But I try to bring to any of these roles, and specifically to Ernie Krause, the question anyone could ask, including you, Hadley: ‘What would I do if I was in his shoes?’ Then it ends up being something more palpable than a museum piece of what it was like to be on this ship in the north Atlantic.”

Greyhound is an adaptation of the novel The Good Shepherd by C.S. Forester. It’s a World War II-set drama that follows a Navy officer who finally gets to command a destroyer, but has to get on top of his personal doubts and demons as he does so. Here’s the synopsis that was shared:

In the early days of WWII, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats.

The movie also stars Stephen Graham (Snatch, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Rocketman), Rob Morgan (Mudbound, Stranger Things, Daredevil), and Elisabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas, The Boys, Death Wish).

The film was directed by Aaron Schneider (Two Soldiers, Get Low) and is produced by Gary Goetzman (Olive Kitteridge, Game Change, The Pacific). The movie will be released on AppleTV+ on July 10th, 2020.

The only thing more dangerous than the front lines was the fight to get there. Screenplay by Tom Hanks, Greyhound premieres July 10 on Apple TV+ https://appl...
