Tom Hanks Just Learned the Last Name of Woody From TOY STORY as Well as Cowgirl Jessie's Full Name

This weekend marks the release of Toy Story 5, the fifth feature length film in the franchise, which has also included several shorts and a marketing campaign really unlike any other in Disney’s history.

The first film came out in 1995, and it’s been over 30 years of the characters remaining favorites among fans. But we are still learning lore and backstory even all these years later.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Tom Hanks, who voices Sheriff Woody in the films, was caught off guard when interviewer Ali Plumb revealed:

“By the way, I only recently discovered that Woody has a surname. Are you aware that Woody has a surname?” Hanks responded, saying that he had no idea. He further asked if Woody’s surname could be “The Sheriff?”

Plumb then disclosed that Woody’s full name is Woody Pride. The film critic continued, “Jessie’s full name is Jessica Jane Pride.”

This led to Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear, saying, “Wait a minute. I’d heard this, that they might be related.” Plumb suggested that Woody and Jessie might be siblings, but Hanks exclaimed, “No! Distant cousins, please. Please!”

While it was always pretty clear that Woody had feelings for Bo Peep, and Buzz had a crush on Jessie, some thought after Jessie was introduced that Woody and Jessie would be paired up. It’s obvious now that they’re related, so the point is moot, but it’s funny that Hanks is still protective of that relationship and it’s origins.

Toy Story 5 is now in theatres everywhere.
