Tom Hardy isn’t just the star of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, he’s also the guy who helped come up with the story it will tell. In fact, he will receive a story credit alongside screenwriter Kelly Marcel. Hardy and Marcel have been collaborating with each other for the past 20 years, but this will be the first time he’s ever received some kind of writing credit. Marcel tells Empire:

“This is new for him, to get credit, but it’s not new for him to be this involved. He’s absolutely 100 per cent committed to everything that he does. He’s married to Venom. He loves this character. He’s very involved in what he thinks should happen.”

When talking about how their collaboration process works, Marcel explained:

“He doesn’t get a pen and write. We spent months breaking the story together on FaceTime, riffing on ideas, seeing what worked, seeing what didn’t. Then I took everything we spoke about and holed up somewhere for three months quietly, knocking out a script.”

So, if the sequel ends up being a disappointment, then some of that blame will placed on Hardy. Andy Serkis is directing the film, and Hardy reprised his role as Eddie Brock. He will star alongside Michelle Williams as Anne Weying; Woody Harrelson, who plays Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage; and Naomie Harris (Moonlight) is also reportedly playing the villain Shriek, who is Carnage’s love interest and accomplice.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is set to release on September 24, 2021.
