Tom Hiddleston Talks About the Note He Received on THOR Set That Majorly Changed One Scene
It’s been 15 years since Tom Hiddleston joined the MCU as Loki Odinson, Marvel’s God of Mischief, and brother to Thor. Since his introduction in the first Thor (2011), fans were hooked, and Hiddleston gives partial credit to the film’s director, Kenneth Branagh.
In an interview with BAFTA (via CinemaBlend), the actor talked about that first movie, in which Loki is struggling with his relationship to his brother, and in a tense moment with Loki’s father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), Hiddleston explained the note that Branagh gave him:
“I remember it like it was yesterday. Ken [Branagh] had said to me, ‘When you say tell me, say it really quietly. And then if he doesn’t hear you and he doesn’t tell you, demand that he tell you and don’t take no for an answer.’
“And so that extraordinary explosion, when I say, ‘Tell me,’ there had been this silence on the other side of the camera, as Tony didn’t say anything. And I just screamed.
“What happened, as a result of that, in the take, there was a palpable emotional reality that was taking place, as I say, in the moment. I couldn’t have cultivated it. I couldn’t have brought it in from yesterday. And the results are in the film forever.”
Branagh is so experienced both on camera and behind it, and he knows how to tell a good story and get what he needs from his actors. This was a great note that led to an incredible performance.
