Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley's Sci-Fi Film CHAOS WALKING Finally Gets a New Release Date
Lionsgate has announced that the long-awaited sci-fi thriller, Chaos Walking, starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley will be released on January 22nd, 2021. The movie completed shooting in 2017, and was originally supposed to be released on March 1, 2019, then after Lionsgate executives took a look at the film, they deemed it “unreleasable”.
The film already had a $100 million budget, but the studio ended up pumping millions more into the production to do three weeks worth of reshoots to try and make the movie work. After going through with that, I guess they now feel the film is releasable.
The film is an adaptation of author Patrick Ness‘ young adult trilogy, and the film was directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. & Mrs. Smith). Liman is a great director, so I wonder what ended up going wrong and caused the production to go off the rails.
The story takes place in the future, “on a distant planet called the New World which has been colonized by humans. Something called ‘the germ’ has seemingly wiped out all of the women on the planet, and an infection called the Noise has totally eliminated privacy: the men and boys can hear what everyone else is thinking at all times. A young man named Todd Hewitt (Holland) stumbles across the first girl he’s ever seen (Ridley) and eventually realizes that he may be the only one able to stop the planet’s destruction.”
The rest of the cast includes Mads Mikkelsen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Mayor Prentiss, Nick Jonas (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) as Davy Prentiss Jr., Demian Bichir (Alien: Covenant) as Ben, Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter as Cillian, and David Oyelowo (Selma, Interstellar) as Aaron.
I hope that the movie ends up being good, but after all the problems that it’s had and the fact that it’s going to be released in January, I’m not expecting much.
