Tom Holland Describes Meeting Co-Stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Calling It "Daunting," "Bizarre" and "Amazing"

Tom Holland has the difficult job of playing a character that fans have seen before. We have had two other people play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the last two decades, so he had to take the comic book character and make the most honest portrayal of him that he knew how. He has done an amazing job over this past trilogy, as well as the other Marvel films he has played the character in, but this most recent film gave him the most daunting task yet- to play opposite his predecessors.

The storyline in Spider-Man: No Way Home featured Peter asking Dr. Strange to mess with the timeline, erasing people’s memories of him. While Strange was attempting the spell, Peter kept interjecting, and things got a little messy. The result was them opening the multi-verse, which welcomed in a host of bad guys from other universes in which Peter Parker/Spider-Man exists. But they weren’t the only ones that dropped by. Past Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appeared in the film alongside Holland, and the actor sat down alongside his co-stars in a panel hosted by Deadline (via ComicBook) to explain the experience, saying:

"It was very daunting, because we were a long way into shooting before you guys [Garfield and Maguire] showed up, you know we were maybe three months into principal photography, and the date of the other Spider-Mans are coming was etched on my calendar."

As the time to film with Maguire and Garfield came closer, Holland asked his two closest friends to be there when the trio rehearsed their first scenes together:

"I realized I had nothing to be nervous about, but on our first at our first rehearsal, I had asked Jacob [Batalon] and Zendaya to come with me to just be there as like my support system. Like, I'm gonna go meet these guys I'm really nervous about it, because we have to read the scene and I don't know how this is gonna go because we're all playing the same character and we all have to bring our own kind of heart and soul into this."

Holland then recalled the fateful day where all three Parkers got dressed up in their suits to film some additional material:

"It was really strange and almost a little unfair how they had us put the suits on and then just jump around in front of a camera together like that was one of the most bizarre experiences of my life. Again, Jacob and Zendaya were there for that to support me, but it was an amazing experience and from day one it was a roller coaster that I didn't want to get off of."

I’m sure it was nerve-wracking, but it all came together and made for an amazing movie. It captured something really special, and I can’t wait to watch it again.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters.
