Tom Holland Says Sony Had a Wonderful Idea for Transitioning Spider-Man Out of the MCU
Fans rode a roller coaster of emotion last summer when Sony and Marvel briefly parted ways, and we were led to believe that Spider-Man was wiped from the MCU forever, then they rejoined forces and revealed that we would see Tom Holland back as the webslinger in his rightful home that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But now, looking back, Holland actually says that fans shouldn’t have been too grim about the split, because while it’s great that he’s back at Marvel, he and his team at Sony actually had paved a pretty bright future for Peter Parker had the split remained final. In a recent interview with MTV, while promoting his Pixar film, Onward, Holland explained:
Do you know what? I’m super excited. The future of Spider-Man was still very bright with Sony, and we had a really, really wonderful idea of how we could sort of transition into Spider-Man without the MCU. And Tom Rothman and Amy Pascal were really confident that they were going to do justice and make a film of the caliber that Spider-Man requires. But that said, I’m really glad to be back in the MCU and have the team back together because I kind of feel that’s where he belongs now. I’m really glad that Tom Rothman and Bob Iger allowed me to be a part of the process of bringing him home. It was a pretty cool experience, and also the best bragging rights ever. I saved Spider-Man.
He went on to recount the fact that he was really drunk when he made the pleading phone call to Disney’s then-CEO, Bob Iger. He went on to say:
I saw Bob Iger recently, a couple days ago in L.A., and I said to him, I said, “When you come to London, I want to take you to the pub to have a pint, and we can talk about how Spider-Man is going to continue to be an amazing franchise for both Disney and Sony.” But yeah, hopefully he comes to London and I can take him out for a pint.
Thank goodness for Tom Holland drunk dialing CEOs, amiright? But as Holland says, no matter where Spider-Man ends up, his future is bright. I’m still glad he’s home though.
