Tom Holland Thought There Was No SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Script When Everyone Else Had Already Read It
You wouldn’t think the star of a Spider-Man movie would endsup being one of the last people to read the script. But that's exactly what happened to Tom Holland while Spider-Man: Brand New Day was coming together, and the story behind it is just as entertaining as you'd expect.
The fourth chapter in Marvel Studios and Sony's Spider-Man franchise recently premiered in Los Angeles, and early reactions have been incredibly positive.
I personally loved the movie, and other critics have been praising the film's story, and Holland recently shared a funny behind-the-scenes moment that revealed just how secretive the production really was.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Holland explained that he kept asking the studio to send him the script. Every time he asked, he was told it simply wasn't finished yet.
Then his younger brother, Paddy Holland, who worked in the film's art department, accidentally exposed what was really going on.
Holland recalled: “And my brother, Paddy, worked on the film in the art department, and he called me up one day, and he was like, ‘Bro, the script is so good.’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about, the script is so good?’
“And he goes, ‘I’ve just sat in the studio. Everyone’s read the script. Everyone loves it.’ And I’d been told that there wasn’t even a script at this point.”
You can only imagine the confusion. The movie's lead actor believed the screenplay didn't even exist while members of the crew had already finished reading it.
Thankfully, once Holland finally got his hands on the script, he clearly liked what he saw. Speaking about what makes Spider-Man: Brand New Day stand out, Holland explained that the movie shifts its focus back to Peter Parker himself.
Following the emotional ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where the entire world forgot Peter's identity, the character is left completely alone. According to Holland, that's the emotional core that drives this story.
He said: “What they’ve done so well, I think, with this film, is they’ve really found a way to make the film about Peter Parker. The mystery of who the villain is really kind of brings this new flavor to the film, and I’m so proud of everyone that’s involved.”
I loved that the film put the main focus on Peter and what he was going through at this stage in his life. It’s what made the movie so good.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up after the events of No Way Home, with Peter Parker living in a world where nobody remembers who he is. While trailers have confirmed the appearances of Scorpion and Punisher, Marvel has continued to keep the identity of the film's primary villain under wraps.
That mystery has fueled plenty of fan theories, with many viewers wondering if Sadie Sink's mysterious character has a much bigger role than Marvel has let on. You all know who she’s playing, though.
Between the emotional focus on Peter Parker and the lingering mystery surrounding the film's central threat, Spider-Man: Brand New Day delivers something a little different while still feeling fresh and true to the character.
Fans won't have to wait much longer to find out for themselves, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31, 2026.
