Tom Hooper To Direct CATS, Film Adaptation of The Successful Broadway Musical
Tom Hooper loves to make Oscar bait movies. His last three films are The King's Speech, Les Miserables, and The Danish Girl, and now he's reportedly going to tackle another film adaptation of a different long-running Broadway musical with Cats. The Wrap reports that he's directing a new version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, and he's "in the midst of deciding how to approach the adaptation — be it with actors, CG-characters or a combination of the two, a la Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book."
The play follows a series of ridiculously-named cats that are part of a tribe called the Jellicles, and...well, read the insane plot synopsis if you're looking for more details. It's nuts. It's also one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history, and a massive success — although watching the trailer for a late '90s video version of the show, I can't for the life of me figure out why.
Let the countdown begin until Eddie Redmayne is cast in the lead role.
