Tommy Lee Jones Hated Working With Jim Carrey on BATMAN FOREVER so Much He Shook With Rage
I always thought that the chemistry between Tommy Lee Jones (Two-Face) and Jim Carrey (The Riddler) in Batman Forever was a little weird. Now we have a story that adds an interesting and funny layer to their relationship. According to Jim Carrey, Tommy Lee Jones hated him. He hated him so much, in fact, that Carrey made Jones shake with rage!
Carrey shared an experience on Norm MacDonald Live where he approached Jones in a restaurant during the film's production and that's where he flat out told Carrey that he hated him.
"It was at a restaurant, and the maitre de said, ‘Oh, I hear you’re working with Tommy Lee Jones. He’s over in the corner having dinner.’ I went over and I said, ‘Hey Tommy, how are you doing?’ and the blood just drained from his face. And he got up shaking – he must have been in mid-kill me fantasy or something like that. And he went to hug me and he said, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.’ And I said, ‘What’s the problem?’ and pulled up a chair, which probably wasn’t smart. And he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery.'"
Wow! That must've been one of the most awkward experiences ever. To be fair, though, Jim Carrey doesn't seem like the kind of guy that Jones would want to be around anyway. It's not hard to imagine Jones not wanting to be around him.
Carrey went on to explain that he thinks his take on The Riddler might have turned Jones off and that he enjoying being a part of the movie anyway.
"He might have been uncomfortable doing that work, too. That’s not really his style of stuff."
I can see that as well. I always thought it was weird that Jones took on that role of Two-face in the film. It really didn't seem like his thing. They must've paid him well!
