Tons of MAGIC: THE GATHERING Announcements at Wizards Presents
During the recent Wizards Presents virtual event, Wizards of the Coast shared some news about some of the upcoming Magic: The Gathering products coming out this year and next. You can always watch the entire event via the video at the bottom of the page, but I’ve also provided some of the major highlights above that. First, Dominaria United was shown off complete with a Product Overview that goes over all of the different kinds of packs plus two Commander Decks featuring Jared Carthalion and Dihada, Binder of Wills called Painbow (Rainbow) and Legends’ Legacy (Black, White, Red).
You can also look at some cards like Evolved Sleeper in the Card Image Gallery which is being updated through August 26. You can play with the cards from Dominaria United during the prerelease events at your local game store between September 2-8 and then the set will launch on September 9-11 with Game Day on September 17, Commander Party Events set for September 30-October 2, and Store Championships from October 15-22. The set will also be available on MTG Arena and Magic Online starting September 1.
Then, in November players will be able to grab The Brothers’ War packs. This set even includes some Magic 30th Anniversary promo cards available while supplies last at Prerelease Events. You’ll want to contact your local game store to learn more about distribution. You can look forward to a first look of The Brothers’ War on September 29-30. Here’s the set’s schedule:
Prerelease: November 11–17, 2022
Launch Party: November 18–20, 2022
Game Day: December 3–11, 2022
WPN Premium Game Store Exclusive Commander Party: December 16–18, 2022
So, what’s coming in 2023? Well, Q1 2023 will bring Phyrexia: All Will Be One and lead into March of the Machine in Q2 2023 which ends the story arc that originated in Dominaria United. The team teases that March of the Machine will change Magic forever starting with the small epilogue set March of the Machine: The Aftermath. Then, in Q3 2023 players will find Wilds of Eldraine which returns to a fairy-tale plane. Finally, in Q4 2023, Lost Caverns of Ixalan will release. Another 2023 release is Dominaria Remastered which brings a wide variety of cards from Dominaria’s history into a single pack.
Another area touched on at Wizards Presents was the Universes Beyond collaboration line. This takes pop culture settings and characters and brings them to the trading card game. There’s The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth which is set to release in midyear 2023 with some great art like the below from Magali Villeneuve and Tyler Jacobsen.
Tales of Middle-Earth has been lead by two guiding principles:
Diversity: The Lord of the Rings is about the different peoples of Middle-earth coming together to fight Sauron, finding strength in their diversity. We want to make this appealing story fresh and relevant to an even wider audience.
Originality: The goal of this set is to express the story and setting of The Lord of the Rings in cards for Magic: The Gathering. Countless prior efforts have painted vivid pictures of this world, but our goal is a modern take on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, lovingly crafted for a new generation of players and fans.
Another Universes Beyond collaboration is with Warhammer 40,000 with some new Commander Decks releasing on October 7 and a few cards were previewed. The collaboration also has three Secret Lair drops coming this year: Secret Lair x Warhammer 40,000: Orks; Secret Lair x Warhammer Age of Sigmar; and Secret Lair x Blood Bowl.
If you’re a fan of The Doctor, you’ll be excited at the new announcement that Doctor Who will be part of Universes Beyond. The collaboration will happen in 2023 and include 4 Commander decks, special card treatments, a Secret Lair drop, and Collector Boosters while pulling from 60 years of Doctor Who.
Finally, starting August 22 at 9AM PT you can start pre-ordering a ton of Secret Lair drops as part of the August Superdrop. What was the best news in your opinion?
