Tony Hawk is Developing a Broadway Musical Based on The Skateboarding Novel SLAM
Here’s an interesting bit of news that I never thought I would be reporting on. Legendary pro skateboarder Tony Hawk is developing a Broadway musical!
The Musical will be based on Nick Hornby’s 2007 novel Slam, which Tony Hawk is a character in. Hawk will serve as a producer on the musical and he will also be the skate choreographer because there will obviously be skateboarding in it!
The music and lyrics for the production will be created by composer Mark Mothersbaugh (Dogtown and Z-Boys, Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, The Lego Movie, Thor: Ragnarok) and SpongeBob SquarePants the Musical‘s Kyle Jarrow will be handling the book.
Producers describe Slam as “a funny, heartfelt coming-of-age story about 17-year-old Sam, a kid from a troubled background who finds refuge and hope in the world of skateboarding. When he falls in love for the first time, with a girl named Alicia, it seems like everything’s looking up – until she gets unexpectedly pregnant. Suddenly Sam has to grow up fast. Along the way, he finds guidance through imagined conversations with Tony Hawk, his idol.”
Though the novel was set in London, the musical is said to take place in the U.S. The goal is to get the musical ready to debut during 2020-2021 Broadway season.
Did you ever think you’d see Tony Hawk produce a broadway musical!?
