Tony Shalhoub Shares First Details For His MONK Movie - "It's a Really Interesting Story"
It was recently confirmed that Peacock was officially moving forward with a Monk movie! Tony Shalhoub will be back to reprise his role as obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk, and the actor has shared the first details for the film, which is set after the COVID pandemic. During an interview with EW, he teased:
"It's Monk present day after however long we've been away from him, 13 years now, going on 14 years. This is post-covid. Monk has been knocked back on his heels because of covid. He's older. He's not going to be chasing down things on the street and things like that. Hopefully (laughs). We're going to have to write to the fact that Monk's older."
He went on to say the film will tell a “really interesting story," and teased, "I can't say too much about it, but it's got all of the good elements that the show was always striving for with a few new twists."
It’s going to be really interesting and fun seeing how Monk is living his life after the events of the series and after living through a pandemic. Monk is a genius detective whose Obsessive Compulsive Disorder both hinders his daily life, but also gives him the preternatural powers of observation.
Shalhoub went on to share his excitement, saying:
"I'm really excited about revisiting it because when we ended it, it really felt like that was going to be it. But to have this opportunity to to see where we all are [is special]. All of the characters have gone through some changes in those years."
There aren’t really any other details on the show, but the original cast will return along with the original writing team. Some of the other characters in the series include his original assistant Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), Lt. Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford), and his second assistant Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard) and her daughter Julie (Emmy Clarke).
He also revealed that the film is set to begin shooting this May in Toronto.
