TOP GUN: MAVERICK Director Joseph Kosinski Weighs in on Whether Fans Can Expect Another Sequel in the Future
Top Gun: Maverick was the biggest movie of the year, and as long as the upcoming Avatar sequel doesn’t knock it out of the park, it will remain that way. But either way, it will go down as the movie that got folks back to the theatres post-pandemic. It was a great movie, and fans would happily show up to watch another movie starring Tom Cruise as Maverick, but is that even a possibility?
The film’s director, Joseph Kosinski, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently spoke at Deadline’s Contenders LA3C panel, and they were asked about whether audiences can expect another film in the near future, or if it might take another 35 years to get a Top Gun 3 on the big screen. Just as with Maverick, Kosinksi said it will come down to finding a story that needs to be told.
“Is there another story that is compelling enough that we need to go back?” he asked, adding: “It seems to me at the end of this film that Maverick has some gas left in the tank. He’s not settling down.”
That sounds like Kosinski is absolutely on board to make another Top Gun! And I don’t think Cruise would back down from it either, as long as they could get the right story for it. Do you think they should stop at Maverick, or make another kickass Top Gun movie?
