TOP GUN: MAVERICK Director Promises Similar "In-Camera Action" in Brad Pitt's FORMULA ONE Racing Movies
One of the many things that audiences loved about Top Gun: Maverick was the crazy awesome aerial jet fighter action scenes. All of those scenes were shot in camera and did not involve CGI, which is actually pretty incredible.
Well, director Joseph Kosinski is going to be doing the same thing with the Formula One racing film that he’s making with Brad Pitt. He’s going to take that same filmmaking technology and apply it to Formula One race cars, and that’s gonna be freakin’ cool! Pitt is set to star in the film with seven-time world champion racing driver Lewis Hamilton producing.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Kosinski shared: “Certainly seeing people react to an in-camera, authentically captured film like Top Gun makes us all feel good that our approach works and is appreciated by audiences.”
He went on to talk about applying that to his next film, saying: “It’s almost funny to me to see people who are so enamored with real photography. Younger people almost haven’t seen a lot of it. They’re so used to CGI [computer-generated images] being a tool of big movies that when you shoot something for real, it feels innovative. That’s exactly the approach for Formula One … to shoot at the real races and real cars and capture it. It’s going to be a huge challenge but an exciting one for me.”
He’s right! So many films utilize CGI these days and it’s super rare to see something like what they did with Top Gun: Maverick. In fact, we may never see anything like that again involving fighter jets. But, I’m looking forwards to seeing how they pull it off with Formula One racing!
In the film, Pitt stars as a driver who comes out of retirement to mentor a promising rookie. Ehren Kruger is writing the script, while Top Gun‘s Jerry Bruckheimer is producing alongside Plan B. The film project is being developed for Apple, which plans on releasing it in theaters.
